LEADERS MAKE SPACE FOR STRATEGY

One of the biggest complaints I'm hearing from leaders right now is that they don't have time or energy to be strategic. Here is one resource and a practice to help you get some tracking.

  • Being a strategic as a leader doesn't necessarily require a lot of time - but it does require making space. This HBR article explains why.

THE PRACTICE

Think about the upcoming week -

Where can you create some space for yourself to wonder, contemplate, explore what's the next strategic step in moving forward with your vision for yourself or your team?

Hold this time (even if it is just 10 minutes) on your calendar and let your people know that you won't be available.

During this 10 minutes, step away from your computer, phone, and any other distractions - take a walk or find a space away from your desk.

Hold a loose focus on the topic you want to dig into and ask yourself these questions:

  1. What is really wanted and needed when it comes to this topic?

  2. What's been missing from your approach so far - or - where do you keep getting stuck?

  3. What help do you need to move forward?
